I Know What You're Thinking

there's no need to hide it from me. it's no secret that your ultimate goal in life is to become a rock star. deep down, that's everyone’s secret desire. it's ok to say so -- it's just that some people will admit to this and some won't. even George W and Dick Cheney both harbor these private thoughts, to form bands called "George and the Monarchists" and "The Pacemakers", respectively.

Peter Hartlaub in today's SF Gate wrote a hilarious article on just this unspoken aspiration and rightly claims that, the better the name of your band, the less chance that your band will ever be famous. in other words, a mediocre name is a sure-fire ticket to the big time. it's a funny article, if you get the chance.

so now i'm asking you. when you form that awesome act that's gonna take you to the top of the charts -- with a bullet, or maybe only as far as open mic night at The Elbo Room, what will be the name of your band?

i'll go first. mine is "Dirk Diggler and his Soft Tab All-stars"

I always wanted to have a band called "Dad's Boxers". Not sure why.

"Free Beer". Just imagine the crowd it would draw if it were posted on a marquee.

I've struggled with this important decision for years, since I can't read music and don't hang out with musicians and therefore have very little chance of ever headlining anywhere, at least not in a musical sense. I like the sound of the name "soularium" but I think I'd do better in a trio called "the weiner boys," inspired by the brilliantly surreal Straight To Hell. First album: Weiner Take All.

thankyaverymuch

Oh man...the time I've spent in my life in rooms with musicians picking out band names...geeze.

Punk Band:
Dishwater Blondes

Vegas Act:
Page Nyne and the Last of The Single Digits.

Bluegrass:
The Tennessee Mountain Howlers

Country:
Nashville Nights

Heavy Metal:
Belladonna

Ok I'll stop now...

I admit to it!

Up until recent tragic events I was seriously thinking of trying to put together a surf punk pop band under the name.....The Tsunamis. I've back burnered that one for the time being.

Miss Bliss - very nice work on the band names. I'm stealing from you! Sacramento has a frequently gigging metal band by the name of the Belladonnas so beware of lawsuits.

Peter - get that Gibby L-50 so we can start our jazz trio and get booked into Bimbo's. I think that Single Digits name (which perfectly describes my fret technique)is up for grabs.

I'm sure there must already be a band named "roadkill" or "winnebago".
