The Way Of The Future

E and i just came home from a date. a date that we both agreed that, if we were single and this had been our first date, would probably have been our last. that might be unfair to say -- after all we both had fun together. we just had a series of loud, unfortunate events.

first was dinner. a little mexican place down the road from us that has good food and great drinks. we settled in to a margarita or two and just as our food arrived i noticed this guy walking through the restaurant carrying a little guitar, followed by a guy with a violin. cool, two mariachi's -- we went back to our dinner. all of a sudden they started playing. right next to our table. but it wasn't just the two guys, it was this. what you can't see in the picture is the seventh member of the group who happened to be the second trumpet player. O.M.G. it was so fuckin loud that E and i looked at each other and started laughing -- only we couldn't even here each other laugh! so much for quiet dinner conversation. so we quickly finished up and headed off to the movies.

as E is having a run of bad luck lately picking good movies to see i picked tonight’s film -- The Aviator. it's got a great cast, it's got lots of planes and it's getting all this Oscar buzz -- i figured it was a slam dunk.

it started out well -- the first hour at least. but holy cow. what the hell was Scorsese thinking? it seems that as Howard Hughes sank further into mental illness, so did the movie loose its pacing and direction. by the last half-hour, this entertaining film had turned into a spacey art house flick. not that there's anything wrong with spacey art house flicks -- only i didn't go out tonight to see that. especially at $9.50 a ticket. The Way Of The Future The Way Of The Future The Way Of The Future The Way Of The Future........ trust me, we weren't the only people laughing when the credits started rolling. as far as individual performances go, i'd have to say though that both DiCaprio and Blanchett were excellent -- and i can easily see them getting Oscar nominations. Cate Blanchett was so believable as Katherine Hepburn. she was amazing. but best picture? director? please!

That picture is so great in illustrating your point about the loud mariachi band. Oh. My. God. I wouldn't have known what to do but laugh either.

And thanks for clueing me in to the Aviator. I'll wait for that one on DVD.

All and all, I have a feeling you and Erin would have survived this date regardless. Sometimes a night like that can even bring you closer together. ;o) Take for instance, my birthday one year when Rob and I went to this restaurant here in Brooklyn that we'd been dying to check out. Real nice fancy schmancy place called Pearl Room, ya know? And there is this whole table of crazy, unbelievably LOUD Italian women and kids at the table near us. Everyone in the restaurant was upset because they couldn't enjoy any quiet conversation. I couldn't even hear our waiter or my boyfriend from across the table because everyone at this other table was sqwaking drunk and loud! The owner of the restaurant actually ended up asking these people to quiet down. And they caused a HUGE scene. I'm not even kidding. The women started standing up from their table and yelling and cursing at the owner that they were paying to eat there and they could make as much noise as they wanted. Me and a couple other patrons stood up for the owner by voicing our support and pointing out how rude they were being. Then the women yelled at US! All the other diners! My boyfriend and I were so put off by the experience, but we managed to enjoy the taste of our food anyway and get through the entire meal. We still laugh about it. The food was great! The date was a wash.
