Die Adware Die!!
last night, when i first sat down to write this post, i was really planning on delivering to you a whole slew of exciting stuff. scintillating stuff, you know -- all deep and introspective -- yet thought provoking. and then i started watching American Idol, then Amazing Race... and by then, all coherent thought was gone. note to self. i really need to do these things BEFORE i start watching TV... plus, i discovered last night that sometime in the very recent past, my laptop became infected by adware/crapware, which was resetting settings and opening new browser windows all over the place. so instead, of a relaxing and entertaining evening, i instead found myself downloading and running (several times) ad-aware SE and then spybot search & destroy. 1,205 deleted crapware files later and two hours of my time invested, i think i've finally purged it all. *shudder* if you've never had this sort of attack before, count yourself lucky. this was a monumental pain in the butt -- and i'm crossing my fingers it doesn't find its way back.
i did have two things to share with you though (that i do sort of remember from before the moment the pop-up windows began rearing their ugly heads). and that's, when i pick up a take-out order from a restaurant, and i pay with a credit card, i'm always faced with the dilemma of do i tip or not? the credit card receipt has that nice little line there, asking me to fill something in and then to total out the tab. i usually draw a line through it but for some reason, i always feel so guilty. am i alone here? do any of you tip for take-out? should i be doing it too? (this thought actually came about from a post by Morticia the other day that was along similar lines.)
the other exciting tidbit i have to share with you is that all of my mini fisheye mirrors that i've stuck on my cars side mirrors, for some unexplained reason seem to be committing suicide. i had one fall off the Z on friday and another off of The Abductor on saturday. they had been there for years too -- and both died within 24 hours?! could they be in mourning for Mao? has the fisheye mirror mother ship arrived and they're all headed home? weird.
that's all for now -- have a happy wednesday everyone!

Spyware is PISS! I deal with it all day long! It has gotten to the point where it has started to break some of our web applications! Not cool! It really sucks, I feel your pain!
My deepest sympathy for the loss of your Mao!

Tip for take out? No chance.
I detest tip jars as well. Okay....I don't work behind the counter at any of these places so I may sound like a jerk but I have a hard time tipping when nothing out of the ordinary (taking my cash and handing me my sandwich) is being done.
I regularly tip musicians if it is possible. Anne and I went to a coffee joint in Fort Bragg a couple months ago and had the pleasure of listening to a really good trad jazz trio. They even took requests (played a faultless "Lullaby of the Leaves" for us). I think I left five bucks in their jar. Musicians probably fare worse than the folks serving food.

being in The City, I usually throw a few bucks down for the delivery person. i always figure they're making a hell of a lot less than I am. Probably.

It depends....there are places where the people who "hand" you the food actually do a fair amount of work in the process of putting your order together such as having to actually build the salad and possibly the dessert...those people I tip. When all they do is hand me my sandwich I don't tip.
I have no idea what is happening with your mirrors though....did you put them on at the same time? Because it might just be that the adhesive has done all it can do and if you put them on at the same time they are likely to quit at the same time.
