False Alarm

well, it wasn't a bomb after all, but it sure made for an interesting lunchtime! i guess someone lost their mailing tube, and because of it, a couple of blocks of market street just outside my office got shut down for a few hours today. i guess it was because the elections are only a week away that they're being so careful, but seriously -- some of those cops were carrying M-16's!

here's a picture of the bomb-squad robot picking up the mail:

the crowd was clearly divided into one of two camps; those that were pissed because they were being inconvenienced and those that were bored and wanted to see something blow up. really! i heard someone saying to a friend how cool he thought it would be if it blew up.

and then one guy next to me in the crowd turned to me and said sarcastically, "i wonder if it's part of the 350 tons of missing Iraqi explosives". i did have to laugh at that one.

What were you doing taking pictures so close to the potential bomb?!

Some people are really starved for adventure and action in their lives aren't they?

i was actually wondering why they were letting us stand this close and had already mapped out a game-plan where i would jump behind the guy next to me if it went off. yeah, i'm channeling George Costanza over here... but shortly after i took that picture the police decided we were all too close and moved us back half a block.
