Three Things

i took a day off from this blog yesterday as i've been spending a few nights in the city with E and have been away from my home computer. she has a conference here this week, and hey -- free hotel room and company expense account! well, the food's free for her, but that makes it half-price when the two of us go out to dinner, right? :)

so anyway, i'm back here this morning to admit that on tuesday night i did three things i never thought i'd ever do. not those three things. pervert. besides, two of those aren't that bad once you get past the... never mind. no, tuesday night i did three *other* things i never thought i'd ever do:

1. eat brussel sprouts and like them.

2. let the bushman get me.

3. go to Hooters with my wife.

i'll address the first and third item first.

brussel sprouts. has there ever been a more vile and slimy vegetable created? a virtual dingleball of the plant kingdom, or at least that's what i've always thought of them. i probably came to this conclusion early on as my mom would prepare them for my sister and i by cooking the shit out of them, rendering them into the slimy nuggets we all know. and because of this when they showed up on my plate the other night at dinner, i nearly passed them over. but i'm glad i didn't as they had been lightly cooked in some sort of garlic mixture and still had a crunch to them. delicious! i'd try them again -- just don't tell my mom.

hooters. and hooters with my wife. can you believe she was the one who suggested it?! as i like to tell her, "honey, you're the best wife i've ever had..." never mind that she's the only wife i've ever had -- she's still the best! anyway, hooters. isn't that a fun word? from a guy's perspective at least. hooters hooters hooters. yep, flat out fun to say too. so you see, the other night she and i were walking around a touristy area of SF, killing time before a work reception she had to attend, wondering if Barry had hit #700 yet. we knew the Giants were playing right then and we were trying to find a place where we could get a beer and watch the game. "how about Hooters?", said my wife... are you serious?!!!, said i, trying not to jump up and down like a puppy on steroids. she was serious -- and yes, they did have the game on and they did have cold beer and Barry hadn't hit #700 yet and i almost didn't notice any of that because of a very attractive young woman named Misha who brought me my beer... *sigh*

on to the bushman. many moons ago, my office used to be in the middle of this same touristy area that E and i found ourselves walking through. in this area there is (and probably always has been) a local character known as the bushman. bushman has two large shrubs that he'll hide behind, waiting for an unsuspecting tourist to pass by, so that he can jump out and say "YAAAA!!" most of the time the reaction he gets is a shriek, followed by laughter. occasionally he'll get a tip. sure enough, bushman is still there, still scaring the bejeezmus out of the tourists. early on in the evening, E and i amused ourselves by watching bushman going through his perfected routine (here's a picture, of course), smug in the knowledge that as locals, we'd never fall for his antics. we were on to him, after all. and then it happened. we walked out of hooters, my mind still on sensory overload from the beer and, well, all of the sensory overload stuff one finds in hooters, when this shrub that was leaned up against a garbage can started shaking, and.... "YAAAA!!" i jumped, E screamed -- we both laughed... i told bushman that it took him over ten years but that he finally had gotten me. and of course i tipped him, it was an honor to actually.
