DuOH!
so Chix and i have a hot tub. it's this big-ass spa we've had in the backyard for years and rarely use. but one of the reasons we don't use it that much is that one of the two pumps -- the one that turns on to a low setting every 12 hours to circulate the water -- hasn't worked very well for years now. in fact, if you turn it on full you barely get any pressure out of it. but the spa has two pumps and we're big procrastinators, so we've just let it go. it also doesn't help that the manufacture of this big behemoth went out of business shortly after we bought it and parts are difficult to find.
well, with the weather getting nice lately, we decided it was time to see if we could get it running right. i was working at home today, it was a perfect time. Chix found a spa repair guy in the phonebook to come out and take a look.
he pulls the cover, takes the motors apart and pretty much finds nothing wrong. then he looks at one of the service valves on one of the pumps, pauses, looks at me and says, "did you turn that off?" i look at it and sure enough the valve is off. and as far as i can tell, it’s been off for years. ...and i was wondering why the jets from that pump didn't run very well??!!
he opens the valve, i turn the pump on. it runs like it did when we bought it. shit. how close was i to burning out that pump??!
so opening that valve, and his advice that i should change the water more often (which i knew anyway), just cost me $80... but at least it's running now, in time for the long weekend. have a good one everyone -- i think i'm gonna crack a beer and try this baby out again!

Enjoy your spa. Don't worry about us poor schmucks who have to sit in a kiddie pool and pretend it is a big kick ass spa. Hee,hee.....no really, HAVE FUN!!!
