The Week So Far
funny thing about technology. you don't think about it when it works, but as soon as it doesn't...
such has been the drama these past few days that is my home wi-fi router. once, a beloved member of the family. now a frustrating piece of hardware whose lights and settings seem to say all is well!, but who refuses to acknowledge communication attempts with the modem. kind of like a teenager.
this has forced some changes in the ol' Beck household. you see, while serious work and email related stuff is handled through the hard-wired computer, we've become comfortable with sitting in the living room on the wi-fi for all our blogging related activities. we returned from the DR the other day, all ready to share stories and pictures. and here they are, still locked away in my now disengaged laptop. i'm about ready to punt, i tell you -- what with Dell telling me to talk to Comcast and Comcast telling me it's Dell's problem. grrr...
but it's not as if these past few days have been wasted, i just haven't been able to write about them. yesterday, Chix and i took in a matinee of Shrek2. i just love going to the movies in the middle of the day. on vacation or not, it makes me feel like i'm playing hooky from work or something. and today, we met George at lunchtime for a little good food and conversation. although we live less than ten miles away, it was SXSW in Austin this past March that i'd last seen him. in talking about the growth of my old home town, now his, i remembered and told a story of the comical day i met Gerald Ford. i must find the old photos from that day and put it all down in writing.
because so many pictures of the DR are trapped over in the laptop, i've only been able to sneak a few over. so think of these three as a preview of more to come:

here's Dan (and my hand) toasting with a drink our Dominican guide called a Scooby. it's 7-up and dark rum, mixed in the bottle while hanging off the back of a big truck, bumping over DR back roads.

a freshly shorn me with a new friend, helping me with my pirate look.

the newlyweds.

I woke up at 11 a.m. and realized I was in trouble. I had a lunch date with Pete Beck, but I didn't have his number. (I should have just done an archive-and-install on Chandi, but noooo ... I never... [Read More]

At some point, A. and I are going to have to pay a visit to the D.R. (and Costa Rica, too, while we're in the neighborhood). Can't wait for more pictures!

Technology sucks. We get all of these gadgets to make life simpler under the pretense that we will be more efficient, therefore have more free time. Right... all we end up doing is more work in the same amount of time... or spend all of our time fixing the #$#$%^$ gadgets. But I'm not bitter ;-)

Gerald Ford????? Darn near twenty years of tales and shared experiences and I have not ever heard about this. Anne and I await the details!
Wow. R and C look so happy that they brightened my day. Good for them!

Sounds like a router firmware upd8 peruse is in order... i hear you on that front. Securing my WiFi network via WEP/MAC Addy Filtering was another undertaking in dire need given the close proximity of adjacent houses in this neck of the woods.
Cool pix.
