Testing - One, Two...
i changed the greeting on my voicemail today. i never get it right the first time, i always have to go back and listen to it, and then i rerecord it again. and again.
and it's usually not because i flubbed up the words. i might have nailed what i wanted to say, it's just i don't like the way i sound in the recording. i'm always talking too fast or my voice sounds too nasal. i used to do this to myself back in my college radio days too -- i'd think i had a great show and then i'd play back the tapes and go, eww...
i always wanted to sound like my friend Matt, who of course just so happens to be a professional voice over guy. he has this great rich voice that sounds like it's coming out of the soles of his shoes (go listen to the sound bytes on his site and see what i mean). funny thing though, in my mind when i'm talking, i do sound like Matt. my mind does this cool filtering thing to prop up my ego.
and while i'm on the subject, i think my mind does the same thing when i look in the mirror. i can flex my muscles, shirtless, in front of the mirror (sorry for the awful visual there -- hope no-one lost their lunch...) and my mind will tell me that i actually have muscles! and it'll overlook the beer belly too. but if i were to see a picture of myself without a shirt on, there's no way i could hide the truth. The truth of course being Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and girl scout cookies...
am i the only one who has this happen to them?

I'm with you on the mirror thing...I finally couldn't ignore it anymore about 6 months ago. Sadly, there have been no great results to report on that front.
Same for the answering machine...I actually found my old college radio tapes last weekend and listened to them...SCARY!!!

I know what you mean. To me, I look and sound exactly like Heather Locklear. Unfortunately, my ideal self image is complete devoid of any realism whatsoever. Damn....

I just don't see why anybody would voluntarily sit down to change their VM greeting. Isn't it kinda like volunteering to take a test at the DMV? Or showing up at the dentist for an extra cleaning? ... Well, I was just in the neighborhood....

i do the same thing on our machine. currently i sound like a morning radio disc jockey ... all i need are the bells and whistles in the background. heh.

Pleeaase! I always think I look pretty, darned good until I go into the store and try something on. Let me just say that there is nothing like two, 3-way mirrors - front AND back- and fluorescent lighting to make you want to open a major artery. Still.... I'm not giving up Girl Scout cookies.
