Take That Spammers!
i am now spam free!! go on Lolita... do your worst.
ok. i really don't mean that. i'm sure that as i write this, there are spam programmer asshats writing stuff to get around the fix i installed tonight. but at least it's a start!
i decided to opt for a combination of fixes. i did the file rename trick that Yoz wrote about, then the hidden field insert found at Burningbird. the latter is very sweet, as it only allows comments to be added to your site through your comment box. any comments that hit your comment.cgi script directly that were generated by a robot will be ignored!
i looked over Junkeater but decided to pass on it as the fine print said they reserve the right to add ad banners to your comment boxes in the future. it also would route all comments to their servers, meaning i would be dependant on the reliability of their equipment for my comments. it's a slick service, but not for me.
thanks everyone who left helpful notes (j-mo, susan, thomas & christine) and links throughout the day! thanks too to Joe for compiling a list of options. i'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is gonna work!

Have you seen the code for the text that has to be entered when you leave a comment? It looks pretty interesting too - in case the other measures don't help. There is a recent post about it on scriptygoddess.com
Like you, I'm going to implement other measures first. Hopefully they will be enough to help stop it.

Eeek! I hadn't seen that about Junkeater, I'm glad you caught the fine print! I'll be trying something else too. There's always a catch...

oooo --christine(bpc). james's plugin looks great -- thanks!! that'll be my next line of defense, if what i did last night doesn't work.
christine(lss) -- go take a look at this plugin. it seems to have the benefits of junkeater, without the drawbacks.

I'm going to have to ask my computer expert about this stuff. He'll be here Friday.
