Desk Cleaning, Day #1

man do i have a lot of crap in my desk... this afternoon i found a book put out by US Robotics in 1996 titled, "Discover The World Wide Web With Your Sportster". it came with my 28.8 modem, when i upgraded from the 14.4.

there's an entire chapter devoted to cool places to visit on the web. i decided to start looking up the url's. of the entire chapter, only three were still working - Yahoo, ESPN (although, today's version is NOTHING like what they described) and The White House. gone are places like The Whole Internet Catalog, Spry Hotland and The-Mother-Of-All BBS.

there is a funny chapter on how to build your first web page and another on which is better - Netscape 2.0 or IE 2.0. and finally a discussion on the future of the web and whether CSS or DSSSL-Lite will win out. there's no mention of MT, Blogger or blogs of any kind. it's amazing how fast the internet has grown - and this book is only seven years old!

hmm, i wonder how much i could get for it on eBay...

When I was in college we mostly used computers for Word and Excel. I can't remember even using the 'Net and I am only 33, graduated in '91.

Love the idea of an Updated Whole Internet Catalogue, but can't imagine where I'd keep one, and the shipping - Yikes!

i remember playing network games with people all over the world ... but not through a browser. we played netTrek which was a top-down view game of star trek. it was a blast ... but that was almost 10 years ago. things have REALLY changed in the gaming world since then too.

memmmmorieeeees ... from the corner of our mind...
