hope i don't offend anyone here with this story. but if i do, sorry but you've been warned.
ever since my buddy Bill and i were kids, we've had this running joke about getting a big 'ol van. our idea was to paint a big custom mural on the side (this was the 70's remember) that said "The Abductor" and drive it around to scare people. ok, not very pc and only something two dorky teenaged boys would think of. years went by, we grew up and The Abductor became only a funny story told at parties after ingesting a few beers.
cut to this past Fall. my dad calls me up to say his eyesight isn't so good anymore and he wants to get rid of his cargo van. why my dad had a van is an entirely different story, but the fact was he did. the most stripped down beast of a van you've ever seen. no air vents, am radio only, and only two front seats. but it was clean, straight and had only 18K miles on it.
long story short, i couldn't pass it up - i bought it from him and brought it home. erin took one look at it and said, "you know, you just bought The Abductor..." lol! i didn't think she had remembered the story, but she was right.
well i didn't think anyone else had either. boy was i wrong. lately we've been letting friends borrow it for moving or hauling chores, every one of them calls it by name. even my friend N, who recently graduated from seminary - she left me an email last week asking if she could borrow The Abductor for the weekend! it's strange how jokes like these can take on lives of their own.
and the running joke now is all body parts must be removed before returning it, or you don't get your deposit back...

at this point, it only resides in legend.
perhaps i should start accepting artwork suggestions for a mural contest? hmm, must think about this further... :)

P my friend...you MUST...I repeat MUST get that thing painted black with the ol 70's airbrushed design put on it. OMG that thing would rock..big time. You can swing by and pick me up and we'll go cruising
